By Zoila Palma González: Minister for Infrastructure Development and Housing, Julius Espat, today announced that the government will shortly be upgrading and rehabilitating 16 miles of the Philip Goldson Expressway.
Espat said it was being done without adding money to the “inherited national debt” and told parliament it was important to upgrade this part of the highway due to vulnerability to climate change.
He added that the effects of natural disasters continue to affect the country’s road infrastructure, “with neglect, underinvestment, lack of vision, lack of maintenance over the past 13 years. [referring to the previous UDP Government] which means that the state of the roads in certain regions of the country is considered deplorable”.
Minister Espat said the upgrade of the road is part of the Remate project which will see the completion of the highway. He also reminded the people of Belize of the renegotiation of the last section of the Caracol road which saved taxpayers $25 million.
