Accelerating Infrastructure Projects in Western Regions: Kongu Global Forum | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: Kongu Global Forum (KGF) members, who met Chief Minister MP Stalin on Thursday, submitted a memorandum, urging him to speed up infrastructure projects in Coimbatore, Erode, Namakkal and Salem.
The KGF team, led by its President A Sakthivel and Vice President Vanitha Mohan, thanked the CM for accelerating the land acquisition project for the expansion of Coimbatore International Airport. They urged him to redesign the 70-year-old Uppilipalayam roundabout which is causing traffic jams in the city. The Ukkadam flyover project has been dragging on for more than five years and it is expected to be completed to facilitate traffic to Palakkad and Pollachi.
“Frequent accidents occur on Mettupalayam Road due to lack of proper service roads. Ongoing overflight work at four locations must be completed at the earliest to avoid such accidents,” the memorandum states. “The local body has reclaimed large plots of land in the water bodies like Krishnapathi Reservoir, Muthanan, Periyakulam and Valankulam which have been encroached. Although these lands are used for the smart city project, they are expected to be used to increase the water storage capacity of the lakes. Concrete should not be used to reinforce lake embankments as it can disrupt the wetland ecosystem.
Members insisted on the restoration of the Noyyal River, as the uncontrolled discharge of effluents into the river leads to groundwater contamination. They insisted on the construction of effluent treatment plants to prevent pollution. They also sought measures to increase the water retention capacity of the Siruvani Dam by desilting the catchment areas and supply channels.
The Salem-Coimbatore Industrial Corridor development will connect four western districts while inviting industries and investors to set up units, according to the memorandum.
