Ajax respond to Arsenal’s opening bid for key transfer target Erik ten Hag

Arsenal are close to completing their first significant signing of the summer, Fabio Vieira from Porto, and have already identified their next target.

After arriving in London for a physical on Friday, the Gunners are expected to finalize the arrival of the Portugal Under-21 international in the coming days.

According to The Athletic, Mikel Arteta will now focus on bolstering his defensive ranks by bringing in a left centre-half.

The Gunners are also hoping to sign Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus, Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans and Leeds United winger Raphinha, but a player who can match Gabriel Magalhaes is the priority.

The Brazil international impressed last season and was almost consistent, but with European football on the horizon for next season, Arteta believes the Gunners are lacking in that department, while Gabriel himself is believed to be a target for Juventus .

Arsenal’s initial offer of €30m for Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez was reportedly rejected, but they are set to return with an improved offer for a player willing to join.

Arteta believes the 24-year-old Martinez can replace Tierney, who missed the end of the season last year with another knee setback.

Arsenal have been linked with Tierney’s Scottish international team-mate Aaron Hickey but face competition from several Premier League clubs.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag had targeted Martinez as one of the players he planned to bring with him from Ajax to Manchester United, but the Dutchman had a rocky start to his rebuilding project.

United are negotiating a fee with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong, while Jurrien Timber has decided to stay with Ajax.

The centre-half is considered one of Europe’s best young defenders, but he is unwilling to give up the assurance of regular first-team action after breaking into Louis van Gaal’s Dutch national team before the World Cup in November.
