Brown Deer hazmat incident, apartment building evacuation

Brown Deer Hazardous Materials Incident

Fire department personnel from multiple agencies responded to a hazmat incident at a Brown Deer apartment building on Friday afternoon, July 15.

According to North Shore Fire/Rescue, heavy smoke billowed from the building’s boiler room. Crews responded around 1:30 p.m. to the building on Green Bay Road north of Brown Deer Road, and residents were evacuated.

The investigation determined that the smoke was caused by a problem with the heating and air conditioning system, causing a possible chemical hazard. The Milwaukee Fire Department regional HAZMAT team was called and identified a possible explosion hazard based on readings from hazardous gas detection equipment.
