Foot bid by Worcester, Bromyard and Leominster Railway rejected


AN AMBITIOUS man who wants to resurrect a 25-mile disused railway through Herefordshire has been called ‘totally impervious’ to critics’ concerns.

Tom Fisher of WBL Greenway met with local groups and councils to inform them of major plans for the old Worcester, Bromyard and Leominster railway line.

But a parish council was less than impressed with his rose-tinted vision for the line which was last used in 1964.


Hatfield Group parish council minutes from September 28 said Councilor Robert Hanson and Clerk Susan Hanson attended the presentation at Grange Court, Leominster.

But they told council that the idea for the walk, cycle and horseback route would cost “well over” £6million in fencing and road surfaces alone.

They said the old railway line was sold to landowners 70 years ago and is now privately owned.

“Some bridges and the old line had been bulldozed and incorporated into fields etc, parts had been left as wildlife refuges,” they added.

This affected several landowners in Hatfield and Docklow, near Leominster, “most of whom were not in favor of the scheme”.

“The gentleman who made the presentation was completely impervious to the comments and concerns of those present,” the minutes add.

Ward Councilor John Harrington, a cabinet member of Herefordshire Council for Infrastructure and Transport, told the council meeting that the county council was not entirely in favor of the proposal.


Councilor Harrington said Tom Fisher “did not thoroughly research the project or make accurate inquiries”.

He had also not contacted any of the affected landowners.

Councilor Harrington said he had also received ‘many complaints’ about the meeting and ‘inaccuracies’.

The Greenway Group website said £4m could be injected into the local economy each year from the greenway, with total development costs of up to £5.9m.
