Leicester City reject Newcastle United’s £40m bid for James Maddison

Leicester City have reportedly rejected a £40million bid from Newcastle United for England playmaker James Maddison.

Newcastle United have tabled a surprise £40m bid to secure the services of Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, according to the Daily Telegraph. The Foxes, however, instantly rejected the offer and instead are keen to offer their prized asset an improved deal to persuade him to extend his stay at King Power Stadium.

Newcastle United are now deciding to return with a higher offer for the England international, with Leicester believed to be demanding a sizeable offer closer to £60m to rethink their stance on perhaps their most prized asset.

The Magpies have endured a frustrating transfer window despite spending over £50m on new additions. Indeed, despite chasing a host of strikers and playmakers throughout the summer, Newcastle United have yet to add more attacking firepower so far. And with the new season on the horizon, the Toon Chiefs are eager to splash the cash on solving this problem by targeting James Maddison.

The 25-year-old was in the best shape of his career last season after recovering from a dip in confidence early in the campaign. But his exploits have flown slightly under the radar, perhaps overshadowed by Leicester City’s overall below-par campaign.

The England international has scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists for the former Premier League champions in all competitions. He was not only the driving force behind Leicester’s late rise to the top half of the Premier League, but also a key part of their run to the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-finals.

Maddison’s outstanding performances for Leicester City earned him the club’s Player of the Year, voted for by the Foxes faithful. His immediate future with Leicester, however, has been in doubt. There were some rumblings of interest from Tottenham.

But it was Newcastle United who made a breakthrough offer, with Leicester rejecting a £40m offer from their Premier League rivals for the playmaker this week. However, the Foxes are set to offer the player a new contract, with his current one expiring in less than two years.

The East Midlands side are the only Premier League club to have only one signing so far this summer. And it’s been widely reported that they’re in such dire financial straits that they have to sell before entering the market.

Youri Tielemans is expected to leave for Arsenal for a while now. But with this one seemingly stuck in the pipeline, there is heightened interest in Leicester about the availability of other valuable assets. Maddison, for his part, would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle United, not just for now but for many years to come.

The 25-year-old playmaker is already an established Premier League star and still has his best years ahead of him. If the Magpies return with an improved offer, they are likely to break their club record. But it remains to be seen if they would like to do so.
