Ministry of Infrastructure Development releases road safety tips for Belize Independence Day celebrations

Contributed: During this festive season, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) advises the public to exercise extreme caution when traveling along the Philip Goldson Highway, particularly between 24 miles, 5 in the village of Biscayne and the Santa Elena/Mexico border.

There are several active construction areas on this part of the road as part of the Philip Goldson and Remate Freeway Improvement Project.

MIDH and contractors Teichroeb and Sons Ltd. and CISCO Construction Ltd., urge all road users to be vigilant, to drive with the utmost caution, especially in areas of active work, and to obey all road construction signs and workers contributing to the at Philip Goldson Expressway.

Drivers are reminded whether they are driving alone or with passengers, they are responsible for their safety and that of other road users and must:

1. Drive within legal and posted speed limits
2. ALWAYS use seat belts
3. Don’t drink and drive
4. Do not use cell phones while driving
5. Only pass when the road is clear
6. Keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you to ensure you can safely stop if necessary
7. Be sure to use the appropriate indicator lights correctly (left or right)
8. Reduce speed at night and make sure the headlights work properly
