Motorists in downtown Binghamton driving through the Security Mutual Building may experience occasional street closures while maintenance work is underway.
A section of Exchange Street was closed for a time while a crane was used to hoist building materials to the top of the ten-story structure.
Rick Wortman of Security Mutual said the project was to resurface the building’s water table. Crews will remove and replace the four foot extension deck around the roof.
Wortman said this type of work needs to be done every several years to properly maintain the building. He said the street near the building may be closed periodically as the project continues. The work should be completed within the next four to six weeks.
Scaffolding has been erected to protect pedestrians using the sidewalks along Court and Exchange streets.
The Security Mutual Building is one of the city’s most important landmarks. It was built in 1904.
