Work begins on SA’s first new technical college


The state’s first new technical college is one step closer, with an architect appointed to begin design work immediately.

The state government says Adelaide-based architect Brown Falconer has been selected to design Findon Technical College, the first of five technical schools to be built in South Australia as part of an election pledge Labor of $208 million.

The college will be located on the site of Findon Secondary School, and construction is expected to begin early next year.

It will focus on manufacturing trades, including electricians, machinists and welding, and is expected to open in 2024.

Four more technical colleges are due to open by 2026 – at The Heights School in Modbury, Tonsley TAFE, Mount Gambier TAFE and Port Augusta – each with their own bespoke specialties.

Education Minister Blair Boyer said Brown Falconer would work closely with building services and Aurecon civil and structural engineers, as well as landscape architect Aspect Studios.

“These appointments mark a significant step forward, with each technical college project having to proceed separately to ensure that industry workforce needs and local context are fully considered,” he said. he declares.

Boyer said the colleges would offer students an upper secondary education program including vocational qualifications alongside completion of SACE.

He said colleges would provide direct school-to-work pathways, including through school-based apprenticeships and internships, work experience and connections with local employers.

For business and industry, Boyer said technical colleges would offer programs tailored to local skills in demand.

“These brand-new buildings with state-of-the-art technology will be managed in collaboration with nearby secondary schools and are an investment in equipping young people with vital skills in high-demand industrial sectors,” he said.

Brown Falconer Director Michael Lambert said, “This is an exciting opportunity to provide a new environment for competency-based learning that is informed directly by industry and employer partners about the skills and experience needed in the workplace.
